Groups and Training

Home /  Services / Groups and Training

Here at Breakthrough Psychology Practice, we offer many different types of Group and Training programs to support our clients and help them develop useful skills. Our clinicians are trained in multiple evidence-based programs aimed at managing child anxiety, regulating emotions, managing HSC stress, and parenting skills amongst others. We aim to run each of these programs once or twice per year, subject to interest. If you would like to submit an expression of interest, please contact our admin team here. Additionally, our clinicians are happy to run these programs in a one-on-one setting.

What Group and Training Programs do we run?

Acing

1. 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching Parenting Program

This is a group program for parents of children aged 2-12 who need help with skills such as:

  • Understanding your parenting style

  • How to encourage positive behaviour

  • Skills and techniques to manage difficult behaviour

After successfully running this program March 2022, we are excited to announce we will be running it again in October 2022. Please stay tuned for more information and contact us here if you would like to submit an expression of interest.

2. Cool Kids Anxiety Program

This is an evidence-based CBT program designed for children aged 7-17 with anxiety or depression. We are currently running Cool Kids as individual sessions, rather than in a group setting. Both Theresa and David at our clinic are trained to run the program, which helps with skills such as:

  • Changing anxious thinking

  • Exposure to fears

  • Problem solving

  • How to parent a child with anxiety or depression

3. Study Without Stress

The final years of schooling are stressful for most teens, and for some, this stress can interfere with their academic performance and their general wellbeing. Study Without Stress is a program for students in years 10-12 who find themselves stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed by the final years of school. The program uses techniques drawn from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and is run in a one-on-one format with a psychologist. The program is a great introduction to stress management and is well suited to anyone struggling with stress in this age group, rather than targeting any particular anxiety disorder or difficulty. Some of the key elements include:

  • Understanding the causes and effects of stress

  • Setting goals

  • Managing time

  • Challenging unhelpful thinking patterns

  • Understanding perfectionism and procrastination

  • Problem solving skills

  • Exam preparation

4. Zones of Regulation

This program is for school aged children who are struggling with emotional and behavioural regulation. We are currently running Zones of Regulation as individual sessions. Both Theresa and David at our clinic are trained to run the program. This program is most suited to children with ADHD and ASD. The program will help children to:

  • Identify their feelings and energy levels

  • How and when to regulate their emotions and behaviours

  • How their behaviours affect other people around them

5. Living with ADHD: Helping your child apply the brakes

Having ADHD has been said to be like driving a racecar with bicycle brakes. We have developed a parent training course based on well-established research to build your understanding and to teach you strategies for helping your child manage their “racecar brain.” The course is run over 3 one-hour sessions in an individual format with the psychologist, with plenty of room for discussion of how ADHD affects your child. This course is designed for parents with children aged 6 - 14 years of age. Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the symptoms of ADHD

  • Understanding the differences in the brain: executive dysfunction and emotional dysregulation

  • Evidence based (discipline) strategies to help facilitate greater social and emotional connection

  • Effective emotion coaching strategies to help children identify and regulate their emotions

  • Strategies to help encourage positive behaviours, as well as reduce negative ones
